Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication
Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication
This procedure is a minimally invasive surgery to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernia. In this procedure, the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around and attached to the lower end of the esophagus to help the lower esophageal sphincter close, thereby reducing the leakage of gastric juice into the esophagus. For hiatial hernia, it also involves narrowing the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm to prevent the fundus from sliding up through it. Though a standard procedure for severe reflux disease and large hiatal hernias, those with less severe GERD can opt for the LINX procedure as a permanent, drug-free treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease.
