About John S. Oghalai, MD

John S. Oghalai, MD, has dedicated himself to the dual role of clinician-scientist, both caring for patients and pursuing life-changing research in the lab. A global leader in ear and skull base surgery, Dr. Oghalai specializes in surgery for acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma) and other skull base tumors. He is certified in robotic-assisted cochlear implantation. Dr. Oghalai also cares for patients with chronic ear disease, hearing loss, and Meniere’s disease.

Dr. Oghalai is board certified in otolaryngology and neurotology, the treatment of neurological disorders related to the ear. In 2017, he joined USC, where he leads the USC Caruso Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and is the Leon J. Tiber and David S. Alpert Chair in Medicine.

Within his USC lab and funded by the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Oghalai is determined to uncover the causes of progressive hearing loss and develop novel techniques to treat this problem, before it worsens. He also directs a training program aimed at producing more clinician-scientists.

Dr. Oghalai is an avid runner, hiker and sailor. He grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, then worked for many years in Houston and in Northern California before moving to Los Angeles.

I strive to provide each of my patients with enough time to explain what they are experiencing. I use the vast resources at Keck Medicine of USC to develop an appropriate care plan. Above all, I want my patients to know they are getting the best care possible, whether medical or surgical management.

I love learning about my patients. What do they do? What are they planning on doing? How can I get them past this issue and help them move on with their lives?
