Our surgeons are skilled in hemorrhoidectomy, the surgical removal of hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus or rectum that cause pain and bleeding. At some point in their lives, many people will experience either internal hemorrhoids, which occur in the lower rectum, or external hemorrhoids, which develop in the skin around the anus. You can self-treat most cases of hemorrhoids with over-the-counter medications or diet and lifestyle modifications. However, a small percentage of patients require more aggressive treatment for severe or recurrent cases of hemorrhoids, including medical therapy, hemorrhoid banding or surgery.
Our surgical team offers several surgical treatments for hemorrhoids, including:
Our surgeons evaluate each patient’s case history carefully to determine the best surgical treatment to relieve their hemorrhoid symptoms.
During a hemorrhoidectomy, a surgeon will make small incisions around the hemorrhoid to remove it. Patients are given general anesthesia before the surgery, so they are not awake or aware of what is happening during the procedure.
The surgery is not long or complicated, and most patients can go home the same day. Surgeons recommend bed rest for at least two to three days after surgery. Patients should stay hydrated and consume adequate fiber to ease bowel movements after the procedure.
Patients can expect to experience pain at the surgery site for the first two to four weeks following a hemorrhoidectomy, especially during bowel movements. A combination of pain medications and regular sitz baths, sitting in a few inches of warm water, can ease discomfort after surgery.
Patients should avoid heavy lifting or straining during bowel movements during hemorrhoidectomy recovery. Most people can return to their regular daily activities two weeks following surgery. However, slight bleeding or anal drainage — typically a light yellow or clear fluid — may occur for a month or more following the procedure.
Hemorrhoids removed through a hemorrhoidectomy typically do not return, making the procedure a good option for patients with severe or complicated hemorrhoids despite the relatively long recovery time. Most patients report high satisfaction with procedure outcomes one year after hemorrhoidectomy.
