Comprehensive Treatment to Improve GERD and Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid reflux is a common condition in which stomach acid flows up into your esophagus (the tube connecting your stomach to your throat). This acid irritates the tissues inside your esophagus and may cause a burning sensation in your stomach or chest. Many people experience acid reflux occasionally and can manage it at home. But when acid reflux happens frequently, you may have a chronic condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease, most commonly known as GERD.

At the USC Digestive Health Institute, our providers know how uncomfortable GERD can be. That’s why we take a holistic care approach. We’ll use treatments and lifestyle adjustments to help you find acid reflux and GERD relief.

GERD Symptoms We Treat

When you have GERD, your stomach acid burns the tissues in your esophagus. If you feel a burning in your chest, it’s commonly called heartburn. If you feel it in your stomach, it’s often known as indigestion.

You may also experience:

  • A sore throat
  • A sour taste of acid
  • Backwash or vomiting after eating
  • Coughing
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath

These symptoms may worsen after a large meal or when lying down. If you experience symptoms often, call your doctor. Over time, GERD can damage your esophagus and put you at risk of esophageal cancer.

GERD Treatments We Offer

You can usually treat acid reflux with lifestyle adjustments like changing your eating habits. If your acid reflux is recurring, your doctor may recommend GERD medications to reduce esophagus damage.

Your treatment plan may include:

  • GERD diet – You’ll want to stay away from spicy, salty, acidic and fatty foods. Aim for a well-rounded diet with vegetables, fruit and fiber.
  • Other lifestyle changes – Examples might include limiting tobacco or alcohol use, losing weight or changing your sleep position.
  • Over-the-counter acid reflux medicines – These remedies can include antacids and alginates. Antacids neutralize stomach acid, so it doesn’t inflame your esophagus. Alginates float on top of your stomach acid, acting as a barrier between the acid and your esophagus.
  • Prescription medication – If you have severe GERD, your doctor might prescribe daily medication.

Sometimes, GERD can continue to cause issues, even after medication. Your doctor might recommend surgery to prevent further harm. GERD surgery options include laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, LINX reflux management system or esophageal surgery.

Our esophageal specialists will create the right treatment plan for you. You’ll have access to the latest surgeries and approaches to help you feel better faster.
