Dr. Louis Vandermolen, a medical oncologist at Keck Medicine of USC

Dr. Vandermolen is a medical oncologist with USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of Keck Medicine of USC, who treats patients for a variety of malignancies including breast, blood, bone, lung and skin cancers.

Here’s what you won’t find on his resume.

Becoming a doctor was always the dream.

“Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a doctor. I grew up on a dairy farm in Eastvale, CA, where I learned to care for and respect animals. That experience helped inspire my passion for helping others.”

He is a pilot and a farmer.

“When I’m not working, I love spending time with my two daughters and my wife, Sally. I enjoy flying airplanes, golfing and farming at my vineyard in the Central Coast.”

The do-list includes an epic flight.

“My personal bucket list includes taking a flight around the world. I’d also love to achieve a handicap of less than 10 in my golf game. Becoming a grandfather is also something I’d love to experience.”

He has visited Southern Africa.

“My favorite travel destination so far has been Botswana.”

Being a father is everything to him.

“My father was my biggest role model growing up. Today, one of my proudest roles is being a happy dad myself.”

Golf provides life lessons.

“My favorite book is ‘Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect’ by Bob Rotella. This sentiment is true about life in general.”

Staying humble is an important value.

“The best advice I’ve ever received was, ‘Don’t forget where you came from.’”

Seeing patients recover is deeply gratifying.

“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing patients and their family years after successful treatment.”

What patients can expect at the bedside.

“I always strive to be a calm and comforting presence in every patient encounter.”

The medical breakthrough he hopes to see become a reality.

“I hope to see the day we achieve a 90%-and-higher cure rate for all cancers.”

He enjoys innovation in medicine.

“I chose to practice at an academic medical center because of the ability to practice cutting-edge medicine and provide my patients with the most updated and innovative treatment options.”

Keck Medicine of USC stands out for its commitment to compassionate care.

“I enjoy working with colleagues who are so committed to offering patient-centered, personalized treatment in a warm and caring environment.”
